From Newfoundland to Galiano Island: My Journey with Tarot and Mysticism
Greetings, dear readers. I’m Maggie Yogita O’Shaughnessy, and I’d like to share the winding path that led me from a quaint town in Newfoundland to the serene landscapes of Galiano Island, where I now practice as a modern-day mystic, Tarot reader, and healer.
Early Beginnings and Ancestral Influences
My journey into the mystical realms began at the tender age of 14 when I was gifted my first Tarot deck. This initiation was more than mere happenstance; it was a continuation of a familial legacy steeped in intuitive arts. My grandmother was adept at reading tea leaves and would often use simple playing cards for fortune-telling. Growing up amidst such practices, I was naturally drawn to explore the depths of divination and the unseen.
Deepening the Practice
For many years, my engagement with Tarot was personal and intimate, reserved for self-reflection and readings for close friends and family. However, as the years unfolded, I felt a compelling urge to delve deeper and formalize my understanding. This led me to undertake rigorous training, culminating in my certification as a Tarot Reader and Advisor (CBTA) through the esteemed Biddy Tarot Certification Program. This intensive study not only refined my technical skills but also expanded my intuitive capacities, allowing me to offer more profound insights during readings.
Advanced Studies and Mystical Pursuits
The quest for knowledge is unending. In 2023, I was chosen to attend the prestigious Tarot Mysticism Academy, where I was immersed in advanced studies of Astrology, Qabalah, the Thoth Tarot, and ceremonial magick. In my “spare” time, I successfully completed and received my certificate for a course of study offered by Harvard University – Prediction X: Omens, Oracles and Prophecies. I have Certified in Past Life Regression Hypnosis Therapy, and accessing the Akashic Records, in 2025. Finally, with true dedication, late nights, and lots of hard work I just graduated from the Tarot Mysticism Academy, and Mastermind Program in late August, 2025. I will tell you that in my heart of hearts I will always be a RWS girlie, although my studies with the Thoth history and deck continues. Completing this incredible program marks a significant personal milestone, deepening my understanding; enhancing the depth of my readings and was such a positive step in my life journey pathway.
I was truly blessed recently to spend a week with someone very special, Yasmin Boland, the international best seller of her Moonology books, oracle cards, and so much more. I was thrilled to certify officially as a Moonologist™ with her. It is very cool for me to come full circle on this. I first listened to Yasmin when she was a guest on a Biddy Tarot podcast while I was certifying as a Tarot Reader with Biddy. A few years later and happenstance or maybe it was manifestation, and Yasmin and my paths crossed again. It was a spur of the moment decision when I made a commitment to certify as a Moonologist™ with her.
Moon Circles and Community Engagement
Recognizing the profound influence of lunar cycles on human consciousness, I felt inspired to create spaces where individuals, especially women, could come together to harness this energy. After completing the Circle Facilitator Training with The Wild Woman Project, I began hosting New Moon and Full Moon Circles on Galiano Island. I am now in the process of expanding these gatherings to virtual platforms, allowing a broader community to partake in rituals, meditations, and collective manifestations aligned with lunar rhythms. My New Moon Virtual Circles for November – December, 2025 are now posted on Eventbrite and there are 777 FREE tickets available.
Expanding Horizons: Integrating Diverse Modalities
My commitment to holistic healing propelled me to explore and integrate various modalities into my practice. I became a certified yoga and meditation instructor, recognized as a CYA-E-RYT550 in Canada and an E-RYT200; RYT500 with YACEP designation in the USA. Additionally, I achieved the status of Reiki Master/Instructor, allowing me to channel healing energies effectively. These disciplines, combined with sound therapy using instruments like the harmonium, frame drum, and crystal singing bowls, have enriched the tapestry of my offerings, providing clients with a comprehensive healing experience.
A Commitment to Ethical Practice
Integrity and ethics are the cornerstones of my practice. I adhere to the professional ethics outlined by the Tarosophy Tarot Association, ensuring that each reading is conducted with respect, confidentiality, and the highest standards of professionalism. It’s essential to me that clients feel safe, understood, and empowered during our sessions.
Literary Contributions and Teaching
Sharing knowledge is a passion that has led me to author several books on Tarot and moon manifesting, all available on Amazon. These works aim to demystify the esoteric, making it accessible to those on their spiritual journey. When I’m not reading tarot, tending to my bees, or teaching yoga on our quiet island farm, I’m weaving new dreams into reality.
Personal Practices and Daily Rituals
My personal practice is the bedrock of my offerings. Daily meditations, yoga sessions, and communing with nature keep me grounded and attuned to the energies I work with. I have a sacred earthing station in my garden near the beehives, where I walk barefoot to reconnect with Mother Gaia, repolarizing and balancing my energies. This daily ritual serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of staying rooted.
Looking Ahead: Future Aspirations
The journey is ever-unfolding. As I continue my studies and expand my practice, my vision is to create more opportunities for individuals to access transformative tools and experiences. Whether through in-person sessions, virtual circles, or written works, my mission remains steadfast: to guide others toward self-discovery, healing, and empowerment.

While I have studied Aleister Crowley, and the Thoth deck quite extensively in formal programs, I do not use the Thoth deck myself. People have asked me why is that? I am very sensitive to magick and the Thoth deck has sigils, spell work and sacred geometry that has been overlaid with artwork. Most people do not know or realize this. I only use various Rider Waite decks for myself and for clients.
Note: All offerings and practices are conducted with the utmost respect for individual beliefs and are intended to complement personal growth and self-awareness.
